Company memory should outlast the model

What current agent engineering suggests about keeping company context useful when models, tools and execution environments change.

Separate the work record from the worker.

Anthropic’s April 2026 Managed Agents engineering article separates the session record, the harness and the execution environment. It describes stable interfaces that let each part change independently. That is a useful architecture lesson. It does not mean an enterprise has to use Anthropic’s hosted service.

For a business, the matching question is simple. After you replace the model or restart a worker, can the team still recover the inputs, the decisions and the accepted result? Important business context should not depend on one chat tab or one process staying alive.

More context is not always better context.

Anthropic’s context-engineering guidance treats the model’s working context as a limited resource. It describes picking the relevant information and loading detail when needed, instead of putting every available document into every request.

Our practical test: can a later worker tell three things apart? What was originally supplied, what someone concluded, and what the company later approved. A compressed summary that blends them into one confident paragraph is convenient until one of the three changes.

Give knowledge an address and a scope.

A reusable note needs more than a title. Keep its source, the task or customer it applies to, and an effective date when the fact is time-sensitive. A corrected delivery rule for one customer should not quietly become the default for every customer.

Permission belongs in this structure too. Being able to summarize a document does not give anyone the right to publish that summary to a wider team. Keep access decisions attached to the stored material, and test retrieval from the viewpoint of different roles.

Test a model change against company work.

Before switching models, replay a small set of representative tasks against fixed reference material. Compare how usable the outputs are, what evidence they omit, which permissions they request, and the cost and review burden. A newer model can be better at one task and worse at following a particular tool contract.

The goal is not to freeze the stack. It is to make change affordable: keep the records the company owns, keep the working interfaces explicit, and evaluate the new execution layer before people rely on it.
