# Spaces and files

Save and use files in the correct space.

A space brings together the members, chats, files, and apps for a task.

## Open a file

1. Open the space that holds the file.
2. Select Files.
3. Select the file you need.

The file opens in the reader. You can continue to view the chat.

## Add a file

1. Open the target space.
2. Check the space’s members.
3. Open the menu beside the space title.
4. Select Upload files.
5. Select your local file.
6. Check the uploaded file in Files.

Note: Your personal space is private. Files in a shared space are available to its members. See <a href="/en/guides/permissions-and-sharing/">Permissions and sharing</a>.
